Can You Count Like a Roman?
Lucia is helping the stonemason carve numbers on the milestones along the Via Appia, the great Roman road. But Romans did not write 1, 2, 3! Learn to count to ten in Latin and help her carve the stones.

Each stone shows a Roman numeral. Tap a stone to discover its Latin name.
💡 How Roman Numerals Work
Romans used letters for numbers: I = 1, V = 5, and X = 10. Put small letters after a big one to add: VI is 5 + 1 = 6. Put a small letter before a big one to take away: IV is 5 − 1 = 4, and IX is 10 − 1 = 9.
💡 Can You See Latin in English?
Unus gives us unit and unicycle (one wheel!). Duo is a duet, a song for two. Tres is a trio, and decem is hiding in decimal. You already know more Latin than you think!
🏛️ Bonus Roman Fact
The oldest Roman calendar began in March. That made September the 7th month (SEPTEM), October the 8th (OCTO), November the 9th (NOVEM), and December the 10th (DECEM). The names stayed, even after the calendar changed!
