Can You Tell What Time It Is in Latin?
Lucia's father has set up a new sundial in the garden. Romans had no clocks on the wall, so they watched the sun's shadow! Learn eight Latin time words and help Lucia read her sundial from morning to night.

💡 Little Latin Tip
Time words are hiding all over English! Hora gives us hour. Dies is in diary, a book for every day. A nocturnal owl is awake at night (nox), and vespers are evening prayers (vesper). Even a.m. and p.m. are Latin: ante meridiem (before midday) and post meridiem (after midday). And if you procrastinate, you put something off until cras!
🏛️ Bonus Roman Fact
Romans split the daylight into 12 hours, from sunrise to sunset. That means summer hours were long and winter hours were short! The first hour, hora prima, began at sunrise, and the sixth hour, hora sexta, was midday. That's where the Spanish word siesta, a midday nap, comes from.
